Raksha Jalandhar is described in Shrimad Bhagwat Purana and Shiv Purana. Jalandhar was born due to Shiva’s anger and they were nurtured by the sea god. Lord Brahma named it Jalandhar. Jalandhar was very powerful and cruel. All the gods trembled in fear of him. Shukracharya was the guru of Jalandhar. Jalandhar had also snatched the kingdom of Indradev. Then with the help of lord Vishnu,lord shiva killed this demon. Jalandhar’s wife was Vrinda. Vrinda’s father’s name was Kalneemi.
How was Jalandhar born?
- Once upon a time Indradev and Brihaspati were going. On the way he met a monk who was engrossed in devotion. Brihaspati called out to him.But that saint was engrossed in devotion. Brihaspati got angry and attacked the sage.
- He was Lord Shiva in the form of a saga. his devotion was broken. So he got angry and opened his third eye.
- Now fire was coming out of his eyes.
- Indradev and Brihaspati got very scared after seeing this form of Lord Shiva. He apologized to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva had forgiven him but the fire in his eyes could not go back.
- Lord Shiva threw the fire in his eyes into the sea. Lord Shiva threw the fire in his eyes into the ocean. He became a little boy from the fire and started crying.
- is cries echoed throughout the universe. all the gods got upset. After that all the gods gathered and went to Lord Brahma. So Brahma ji reached him in the ocean. Lord Brahma lovingly took the children in his lap. With great difficulty, bhrahma freed himself from his neck. Lord Brahma named the child Jalandhar and handed him over to the sea god. Jalandhara means jal+andar.
who was vrinda?
- vrinda was the daughter of the demon clan kalneemi. Vrindavan was engrossed in the devotion of Lord Vishnu since childhood.
- Once Rakhsak jalandar was fighting in the war and he saw an old woman on the way. So he became infatuated with Vrinda. Sent marriage proposal to Vrinda’s father.
- Vrinda’s father accepted the proposal and got them married. Jalandhar was already powerful. And now due to Vrinda’s devotion to her husband, her powers had increased even more. This is how Vrinda became Jalandhar’s wife.
Vrinda’s curse to Lord Vishnu?
- jalandhar was not losing the war because of vrinda devotion to her husband. all the gods were very upset. And all the gods went to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu took the form of Rakshas Jalandhar and went to vrinda and violated the sanctity of Vrinda.
- When the old woman came to know that Vishnu had tricked her, she cried a lot. And cursed Vishnu that he would turn into stone at this very moment. Lord Vishnu turned to stone. All the gods prayed to that he is creator of creation, please forgive him. So Vrinda donated her life to Lord Vishnu. Since then Lord Vishnu was named Shalegram.
War of Shiva and Jalandhara-
- On the other hand, Lord Shiva’s war was going on with Jalandhar. But Jalandhar was not ready to give up. Because the old woman’s purity was saving her. As soon as the purity of the old woman was broken. Lord Shiva cut off the head of Jalandhar.
How vrinda became tulsi mata?
when lord Vishnu turned into stone due to vrinda curse. At the same time jalandhar head fell at vrinda feet. Seeing his head, she became a sati and set herself on fire. Vrinda became a heap of ashes. A small plant grew from that pile of ashes. Lord Vishnu named that plant tulsi. And blessed that every year Shalegram and Tulsi will get married. Still Tulsi will remain a virgin.
when does tulsi marriage?
- when lord Vishnu remains in yoga nidra during chaturmas. So we wake up on Kartik shukla Ekadashi.
- On the same day, tulsi and shaligram are married. All auspicious functions begin it is said that whoever observes ekadashi fast on this day. He attains salvation.
